S2 E4 How I Discovered Ma’ax Na

In 1995, I discovered a lost ancient Maya City in the jungles of Northwestern Belize and named it Ma’ax Na. This podcast is the story of how I did it.

Dr. B, I MUST hear more about Ma’ax Na… and more about your time at PfB, more about who Doc Charles was, Palestine, Texas (where I live). I was one of the founders of PfB and may be the last one living… don’t know. Would like to talk about your experiences … are you in the published (green)books about La Milpa? (from UT)
I went to Paleque with Chris Powell and Alonzo M. and young lady, Lilia, several years ago… before it was Dr. P.
May try to go to Copan with you… don’t know how I’ll be doing (I’m 80), but really want to go.
Love all your pod casts and lectures…. and THANKS
    Best wishes,
    Ben

    Hi Ed,

My wife is a History teacher to teenagers, speaks very little English, and I’ve enjoyed sharing some of your The Teaching Company / The Great Courses lectures and now this wonderful podcast, tomorrow we will go with the Colombian Exchange and Pandemics…

Please do the second (and third) Ma’ax Na podcast!!!

    Best of luck, take care,

    Sergio

Awesome to hear the tale of what was one of the most exciting times of my life. You were a great leader and I will always be proud to have been part of the team. Cheers!

Hey Brent! I miss you buddy! Looks like I will do a Ma’ax Na Part 2 and since you were my co-author in season 3, I’ll be giving you a shout out for sure. It really was a hard experience to top, eh? I was borderline depressed on and off for a couple years after thinking “well how am I going to top THAT?”

Dr. Barnhart – I loved the Ma’ax Na podcast. That experience had to be so rewarding to you.
Looking forward to the rest of the story.

Love your podcasts. Just found you today and have watched several. I’m getting
ready to move to Belize, just bought a small house in a community near San Ignacio. There are mounds on the property and they know I want to start exploring them. I’ll let you know if we find anything. I do know that several years ago they did find pottery chard’s.

      Hi Victoria,
Best of luck in Belize! You are now the protector of that land and the history upon it. Enjoy exploring but be careful – archaeology is not a repeatable experiment.
