S4 E1 Dr. Jones I Presume?
For most people, Indiana Jones is the archetypal archaeologist. But is he? Indie is a lot of things, but a good archaeologist isn’t one of them! Join Dr. Ed as he separates fact from fiction.
Show Notes:
None yet, but I’ll plug my friends at the Indiana Jones Minute Podcast. They’re funny and their show is great! All four moves, discussed one minute at a time. I joined them for minute 67 in the 4th movie and had a ball!
Very entertaining. Glad you’re back, Ed.
From your newest supporter; I really enjoyed the Indy program. Several of my archaeology professors in the 1980s had Indiana Jones movie posters on the walls of their offices.
I’m sure you have great topics mapped out for your future podcasts, if you run low someday here are some more ideas, and the personal anecdotes from your past adventures are some of the strongest materials.
1: overtaxing environments that contributed to the downfall of whole cultures
2: Reconstruction of fallen Angkor buildings from piles of rubble at Ta Phrom and elsewhere
3: destruction of the canal infrastructure at Angkor as the result of drought and floods, vulnerability of intricate economies to tipping points.
4: El Mirador site in general and early giant infrastructure. Why were the sacbes to El Tintal so huge? Lidar finds, update on area projects,
5: contacts/diplomacy/trade between Tikal and Teotihuacan,
6: Your personal anecdotes from copan, Palenque, other sites
7: popularity of looted mummies and other egyptian artifacts from 1800s until it ended
8: Mesa Verde: overview of the sites and the simultaneous depopulation of the region
9: compare astronomy from various cultures
Just some ideas, I wish you luck in your career path.
Hi David,
Thanks for listening and your support! The topics you suggest are all good one’s, though for now I’ve limited ArchaeoEd’s subject matter to civilizations of the Americas. I am running through my initial list of topics and looking for new ideas. Your recommendations here are valuable – thank you! Ed
